Ulysses House Named Apprenticeship Employer of the Year
10 Mar 2015
Ulysses House residential home, part of Precious Homes Ltd, has been presented with an award for Health and Social Care Apprenticeship Employer of the Year.
The awards ceremony, which was hosted by Sandwell College, saw employers from across the region join students to celebrate the college’s links with local industry.
Dan Eccles, Registered Manager of Ulysses House, commented, “Throughout my time as a Deputy Manager at Ulysses, we have worked closely with Sandwell college to develop the next generation of support staff. Our journey together has been an enjoyable one and we have enjoyed very close ties with the college and the staff there. The team at Ulysses is very proud to be recognised for the work we have done and to be affiliated with such a great team at Sandwell College.”
Ulysses House provides specialist support at home and in the community for adults with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, mental health issues and challenging behaviour. Based in Edgbaston, Birmingham the project welcomed its first apprentice, Kavita Dheer, in November 2010. Since then, Ulysses House has taken on eight apprentices, with six of them, including Kavita, staying on in long term employment.
Kavita commented, “Since I started my apprenticeship at Ulysses House in 2005, I have continued to be offered development and training opportunities and was promoted to Acting Senior Support Worker in 2013. The partnership with Sandwell College enables apprentices like me to fulfil their career aspirations. The award recognises the fact that the management at Ulysses House are extremely supportive and continually invest in their staff.”
Commenting on the awards, Sandwell College Principal Graham Pennington said: “This is a chance for us to give something back. Without our employers our apprentices would not have the jobs or work experience they need.”
