Spotlight on Treow House: Innovation, teamwork and empowerment
09 Sep 2019
This month we’ve put the spotlight on Treow House to recognise and celebrate the outstanding work taking place at the service.
Here, Manager Jo Rodell provides an insight into how, although the ‘norm’ for her team, they are really thinking outside the box and achieving some fantastic outcomes for the people they support!
“We don’t think we are doing anything different really,” explains Jo. “It has become ‘the norm’ for us to work this way and, from this, we have developed a service culture where everyone does the best they can, acting as advocates for the people we support and not being afraid to try new things!”
From supporting individuals to set up their own activities committee, organising on-site pet therapy sessions, celebrating inclusion at the Houghton Regis Carnival and opening their doors to friends and families at service open days, Treow House is always a hive of positive activity – with the people supported describing the services as being ‘like a family’.
“Inclusion and having lots of events going on is part of the culture at Treow House”, explains Jo. “The sessions are all led or derived from ideas from the people we support telling us what they would like to achieve. In response, my team does whatever it takes to make things happen. The key is empowering the people we support in every area.”
The team members also work individually to ensure that they provide the very best innovative support.
“As well as empowering the people we support, we aim to empower the team to provide the very best support they can in innovative ways. As an example, when we are planning a holiday with someone, the first step is to list every activity the individual wants to take part in– only then do we risk-assess the elements. We have found that risk assessing in advance can create barriers. Instead, we work as a team to overcome challenges in innovative ways.”
The team have also received praise from one of their commissioning partners following a recent bespoke transition.
“We have been working with Jo Rodell and her team over the past 6 months transitioning a new lady to your service at Treow House. We have been so impressed and grateful with the level of support given to both our service user and team…Jo and her team were consistent, with a positive “can do attitude” and nothing being too much trouble.
They are such a pleasure to work with. They were friendly and welcoming and made our jobs so rewarding. We cannot thank them enough and would like you to pass on our sincere thanks for all the support in a successful transition… and would highly recommend their service for other service users.”
Becki Davis-Coxsell, COO, adds: “Treow House, Jo’s leadership and the culture that has been developed at the service epitomises everything that Precious Homes stands for and I believe deserves recognition. The team are a real example of how to deliver outstanding support and, when you truly think outside the box in every area, you can achieve the very best for the people we support.
Thank you to Jo and the Treow team – making us very #ProudToBePrecious!” – Becki Davis-Coxsell, COO
