Nicole makes the move to independent living

This August, everyone at Chamberlain Road waved a fond farewell to Nicole. After being a huge part of life at the supported living service in Kings Heath for more than 18 months, Nicole felt ready to make the move to more independent living. After throwing a farewell party for her friends and support teams, Nicole headed off to start a new life with her sister in Slough.
Kirsty, Manager at Chamberlain Road, explains:
“During her time with us, Nicole’s confidence had grown massively, to the point where she feels ready to move out. She has made some great friends and has kept herself busy and built some great skills by volunteering in a local charity shop and working regular shifts at L’Uccello cafe. ”
“Working in the cafe and volunteering in the charity shop on the high street gave me a way to get out of the house and do something different. I didn’t like having to do the cleaning up and the end of the shift, but I make the best coffee!”
To anyone who knows Nicole (including those at Chamberlain Road and the neighbours up and down the street!) it will be no surprise that she didn’t leave quietly. With her trademark 90s music mix and extremely loud-speaker system set up in the garden, Nicole provided an upbeat sound-track for a fantastic leaving party!
Thinking back on her time at Chamberlain road, Nicole says, “To be honest, at first I didn’t really want to come to live here, but I’d had trouble where I was because people didn’t really like me being different. The staff helped me to settle in, showed me the area and helped me to look after my flat. I felt safe having them with me and they’ve given me the confidence I need to move. I’m going to go and live with my sister in a flat where I can be totally independent, but there is support there if and when I want it.”
“I’ve loved living here and I’ll be sad to leave because I’ve met a lot of lovely people. I will miss Precious Homes. To all the staff at Chamberlain Road, I really appreciate the support you’ve given me.”
