L’Uccello café: Building skills and confidence
24 Mar 2020
L’Uccello café is our social enterprise café, based at Swan Court in Birmingham. From the outset, the café was established to provide a space for social interaction as well as opportunities to learn life skills. For Sam, from our Robin’s View supported living service on the same site, L’Uccello has done just that.
Sam moved from a hospital setting into supported living almost a year ago. As well as using the café to socialise, Sam has spent time working in the café, gaining valuable skills, interacting with customers and getting a good understanding of what’s required working in that kind of environment. Sam has also joined the choir, which is run by Suzanne, social enterprise coordinator for L’Uccello.
Sam explains, “Joining the choir has brought out my inner self. I really enjoy singing and it makes me feel so happy being part of the choir. I also especially enjoy cooking the meals from scratch and like seeing the end result and how much people enjoy the food”.
Sam continues, “I feel like I have so much more confidence and the staff are amazing in helping me. I don’t feel worried about asking questions, they are always there to help.
I go out a lot more than I used to and both the café and Robins View have made me feel so much less institutionalised.”
Suzanne adds, “Sam couldn’t serve customers when she first came to the café but now she happily engages with everyone. It has been wonderful to see her confidence growing day by day and we are really proud of her. She did a fantastic job of singing with the choir in front of a big crowd of visitors at the Dudley open day too – brilliant job Sam, well done!”
