Congratulations to Wendy and MK Snap!

Congratulations to Wendy, a resident at Oxley Park, and MK Snap, a charity offering professional support and training for adults with learning difficulties, who have been awarded £50,000 from the Big Lottery for an education and learning garden project at the MK Snap centre in Milton Keynes
Wendy was part of the campaign to gather local community support and appeared with MK Snap on ITV Anglia news and in the Milton Keynes Citizen.
Wendy said was delighted that MK Snap won the award:
“I was excited and we did well. It made me happy – it’s good for us because it’s a big achievement. They are going to build a new big garden and a pond, and a classroom outdoor area.”
Wendy has been attending MK Snap for the past five years where she has been learning daily living skills and also attending workplace and educational courses. She volunteers every Thursday at the MK Snap Café which is open to everyone in the local community. It’s a great opportunity for Wendy to develop customer service skills and also to help out in the kitchen baking the cakes which are sold in the café.
As Wendy explains it has been a very rewarding experience for her and it has really helped further her independence:
“I have learnt a lot since I’ve been going to SNAP. I’ve done cookery sessions, computer skills and I work in the coffee shop on Thursday mornings, and I enjoy it. I also do kitchen duty on Thursday afternoon.
“I’ve also learnt how to do budgeting from money management sessions and also some maths – adding and taking away.”
“I’ve also done lots of other things such as singing in the choir for Disability Awareness Day, helping out at the Hilton Hotel for the MKDons event, where we met the Mayor of Bedfordshire and I met MKDons Goal keeper, Charlie Burns, who was a special guest at SNAP when we received our certificates of achievement.
“I feel very proud of myself for doing so well and all the hard work I’ve put in the last five years. I would like to be more independent and do more things on my own.”
Feedback for Wendy from MK Snap has been fantastic:
“Wendy has become a very valuable member of the catering team at MK Snap. We have seen Wendy improve in many areas by her being in this role. Her confidence and self- esteem appear to have improved no end. Customers at the coffee shop have commented on how well Wendy does when serving coffee and cake to them.”
Everyone at Precious Homes would like congratulate Wendy on her fantastic achievements and progress over the past five years. Wendy’s continues to become more independent and is now ready to step-down to supported living. She will be moving onto Fenny Mews, our Supported Living Plus service in Bletchley, Milton Keynes over the next month or two. We look forward to hearing about Wendy’s move and seeing photos of the new garden at MK Snap when it is complete.
