Adrian’s journey to independence
09 Sep 2019
Adrian who has been living at Stratford View in Milton Keynes for the past three years has moved to Northern Ireland and is no longer receiving commissioned support – a huge achievement and a real success story! Manager, Ashleigh Calder, tells us all about his amazing journey with Precious Homes.
“Adrian is from Northern Ireland and came to the UK to live with his family.” Explains Ashleigh. “Adrian has autistic spectrum condition and mental health needs and moved into our supported living flats in 2016 – with key goals to reduce his medication and return to Ireland.”
Adrian received support from the Stratford View team throughout the day and night, combined with weekly input from Precious Homes’ Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT).
Ashleigh explains: “Adrian was supported through our in-house Psychologist and SALT around anxiety management, learning alternative coping strategies and relaxation techniques. Once these were embedded, he was able to self-regulate his anxieties using the new tools he had learnt.”
This involved Adrian talking through his anxieties and worries with staff as well as increasing his independent skills. Combined with a clear plan to reduce medication, Adrian was able to access the community independently overtime.
“His confidence, ability to manage his emotions and independence skills were increasing daily and he made the decision, with his family, to return to live in Northern Ireland – his ultimate goal achieved!”
Adrian is no longer receiving support and is looking forward to his new life back in Ireland.
“Well done Adrian and thank you to the consistent team he has had behind him at Stratford View – helping him to reach his goal!” Ashleigh adds.
