Independent living and education at Highbury Gardens
22 Sep 2020
Congratulations to Aamir, who has recently started a college course studying life skills and independence.
Aamir moved to Highbury Gardens, one of our residential services in London, in July 2018. The team at Highbury has been working closely with family to find the right course for Aamir, who has Autism and learning disabilities, as well as being non-verbal.
The course is a specialist course designed for people who want to develop life and independence skills through practical activity. By taking the course, Aamir has the opportunity to gain a college certificate within a curriculum that is bespoke and tailored to meet his individual needs and which allows him to try lots of different learning opportunities.
Vicky Strange, Registered Manager at Highbury Gardens, explains “This is something that Aamir has wanted to do for a while now. Finding the right course and the right mix of students has taken a bit of time, but it’s a real success and satisfaction for him, the family, and us as a team to see him enjoying the course and meeting his personal goals.”
Aamir has 1:1 support from a learning support assistant while at college, as well as two staff from Highbury. The aim is to reduce this over the coming weeks, as Aamir settles into the course and the new surroundings.
Vicky continues, “The course has enabled Aamir to develop his social skills with other students, teachers and learning support assistants, as well as improving communication with his team at Highbury. All of this is helping Aamir to become more independent of a residential care setting, which is a fantastic step forward.”
Well done Aamir, we are all very proud of you and can’t wait to see what you achieve next!
